The Celtics will then take part in a seeded tournament beginning on July 12th and running until the 17th, guaranteeing a total of eight games, with three in Utah and at least five in Vegas. Assistant coaches Jerome Allen and Walter McCarty will coach the teams in Utah and Vegas, respectively.
The Celtics will feature an impressive group of young players on their summer roster, headlined by rookies Jayson Tatum, Semi Ojeleye, and Ante Zizic, with sophomores Jaylen Brown and Demetrius Jackson returning for a second go-around. In fact, Brown made the decision to play again even though high lottery picks often skip Summer League after their rookie season. Brown’s drive to improve his skills and earn more minutes is a good sign for the Celtics that he is hungry to win.
In addition to the big names, the Celtics will feature their other 2017 draftees, Kadeem Allen and Jabari Bird, along with the NBA D-League’s 2017 Rookie of the Year Abdel Nader. He averaged an impressive 21.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists for the Maine Red Claws. French forward Guerschon Yabusele will not be participating as he continues to recover from bone spurs in his foot.
Rounding out the roster will be various undrafted players and free agents. Scoochie Smith, a guard from Dayton, scored 13.8 points per game and shot 38% from beyond the arc in his senior year. Perrin Buford averaged 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a guard/forward combo for Middle Tennessee in 2015-16, when they upset Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Buford played 39 minutes and scored 15 points in that game.
Hungarian Rosco Allen averaged 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds while making the All-Pac 12 team at Stanford, but went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft and spent the year playing for Obradoiro CAB in Spain. Trevor Thompson brings rebounding to the summer roster after averaging 10.6 points and 9.2 rebounds last season for Ohio State, earning an honorable mention for the All-Big Ten team.
Celtics fans could be getting a look at what the future of the team holds when Brown, Tatum, and Zizic are on the floor together.
