Matthew Lugo

This is a player to get excited about this draft class regardless the team you route for. Nephew of Carlos Beltran, Matthew Lugo is a shortstop from the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico who is a commit to the Miami Hurricanes, if he decided to go the college route.

More from Boston Red Sox

Lugo was the 69th overall pick in the draft, pretty good number; is it a coincidence? Let’s go with a no. Lugo was the No.1 prospect out of the island this year and should’ve been picked up sooner than the 3rd round but fallen perhaps due to his youth.

This kid could end up developing into a stud SS/2B in the near future for the Red Sox, especially so Michael Chavis can go somewhere he is more comfortable.

Based on his upside and potential, this kid is going to end up producing a .285 average one day with a season line of something around 20 HRs 70 RBIs 15 stolen bases for the Boston Red Sox.

Something that Lugo needs to do that will be crucial is to not listen to the comparisons people are going to make between him and his uncle. He needs to remain his own player as that is what got him in this position in the first place.

His smooth play matched up with his sense of confidence and swagger, expect this kid panning out as a similar success story as Xander Bogaerts has been for the Red Sox.
