At the age of 33, Matthew Slater has established himself as one of the best special teams’ players to play the game period. In his 11 seasons with the New England Patriots, Slater has earned a role as captain and has become just as known for his post-game chants and coin toss calling as his downing the ball within the 10-yard line on kickoff returns.
With some young players emerging on the special teams’ unit, Slater’s days could be numbered. Over the past couple of seasons, he has experienced more injuries (although he hasn’t missed many games due to them) and one has to wonder if the wear-and-tear will start to get to his aging body.
While it’s hard to imagine the New England Patriots without Matthew Slater, the day is coming sooner rather than later. But, don’t be surprised if he ends up on the coaching staff once that day comes.
So, enjoy watching this special player in 2019. It could be the last time you see him downing punts in a Patriots’ uniform.
