Things continue to get ugly for the Boston Red Sox as their losing streak was extending to eight games following a 7-4 loss to the New York Yankees.

Trading Andrew Benintendi for New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard doesn’t sound like such a bad idea for the Boston Red Sox now does it?

After watching top of the rotation guys like Chris Sale and David Price struggle beyond the four-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, adding another starter to the mix as the MLB Trade Deadline would’ve perhaps lit a fire under those guys.

But, let’s not pretend a trade would’ve cured all problems in the starting rotation.  Aside from Eduardo Rodriguez, it’s time for the starting rotation to be held accountable.  Following the 7-4 loss to the New York Yankees, Price and the crew are a combined 37-39 for the season with a 5.07 ERA.

More from Boston Red Sox

If you are looking for an exact reason this team is 14 ½ games back in the AL East and barely staying afloat in the Wild Card race, it is that.

The frustrating thing is the mix of David Price, Chris Sale and Rick Porcello can be so much better than they have been.  Even more frustrating is that the breakout season of Rodriguez is being wasted as of early August.

Things can still be turned around, but it starts with the starting rotation and it starts after David Price’s ugly performance against the Yankees in which he was roughed up like he usually is against the Bronx Bombers at Yankees Stadium.

The last sounding of the alarm

Quite frankly, the Boston Red Sox are beyond the point of a wakeup call, the snooze button on the alarm clock has been too many times in 2019 and may have been hit for the last time.  This current 8-game losing streak is a nightmare David Price and his teammates may have trouble waking up from.

"“It’s been tough,” Price said following another rough outing.  “Just for myself, the rest of our pitchers, our starters, it’s been a tough stretch for us for sure.  We haven’t thrown the ball to our capabilities the last eight or nine games and for the most part of the season, and that’s been tough for us.”"

As Red Sox manager Alex Cora summarized the horrific week the team had, he still has hope and in reality, Red Sox Nation should to.  There is a lot of baseball to be played and the defending World Series champions have the roster to be better.  But, it’s hard at this point.

The way the team keeps finding ways to lose is discouraging.  But, Cora knows the engine that can turn this train wreck of a season around lies within the starting rotation and it begins with Chris Sale getting his act together on the mound and David Price getting his head focused back on what really matters instead of throwing shots back and forth with Dennis Eckersley.

Next. Boston Red Sox: Lack of identity is the root of the team’s struggles. dark

"“We have a very good team in this clubhouse – 1 through 25, we have a very good team,” Price said.  “Just some of us haven’t had very good seasons up to this point.  There’s still [48] games to be played and there’s still time.”"

Unfortunately, that time is running out if the winning doesn’t start happening immediately.
