Despite making it clear he won’t return this season, New England Patriots former tight end Rob Gronkowski continues to tease fans of 2019 comeback.

Wouldn’t a New England Patriots reunion of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski look nice on the football field.

After one loss, suddenly the Patriots aren’t the NFL’s best team anymore.  Of course, this has been the continuing narrative when it comes to the most successful football team in the last two decades.

In falling to the Baltimore Ravens prior to their bye week, the defending Super Bowl champions appear to have a couple of dents in their armor on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

Leave the defense up to the genius of Bill Belichick, but offensively?  Well, Tom Brady has some work to do to get his offense where he wants it.  A refreshed Julian Edelman along with Mohamed Sanu and the debut of 2019 first round pick N’Keal Harry should help but add Rob Gronkowski to the mix at tight end and well…Brady would have quite the arsenal to work with heading down the stretch.

While the odds are dwindling that Gronkowski will actually un-retire this season, both Brady and the once dominant tight end continue to play with the emotions of fans with social media posts like this one on Twitter:

Of course, this is about the two teaming up on a new business endeavor, but both of these Patriots greats knew exactly the reaction this tweet and retweet would do to Patriots Nation.

With the team in desperate need of a tight end, there is hope Rob Gronkowski will walk through the door he left open towards the beginning of the season.  The odds are low, but if Tom Brady needs his big weapon back down the stretch and starts begging…Gronk wouldn’t really leave him hanging, would he?

More from New England Patriots

While Bill Belichick and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft will also have something to say about a Gronkowski return financially, the on-the-field impact of this presence in the offense would solve a couple of the team’s needs.

The timing would be right

Not only is he a threat in the receiving game, his blocking could help an offensive line that hasn’t been exactly keeping Tom Brady on his feet his season.  Also, keep in mind that in his last two seasons with the team, Rob Gronkowski didn’t really come to life until the second half of the season and down the stretch.

A couple of seasons ago, he found his dominance in a December game against the Pittsburgh Steelers that carried into the playoffs and Super Bowl.  And last season, he made an impact with his blocking which helped powered the running game.  Then he made some big catches, including the one that set up the go-ahead touchdown in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

That same Gronkowski, even if not dominant, would give the offense a huge transformation.  Suddenly, things would open up for Edelman, Sanu, Harry and potentially Phillip DorsettBen Watson would become a nice No. 2 tight end and the running game could get going again.

Next. New England Patriots: Tom Brady could actually leave New England. dark

Most importantly, Tom Brady would have a familiar sense of security on the football field.  With Gronkowski having until Week 13 to make any kind of decision on coming back in 2019, the countdown is now on.  Either the teasing will end, or the New England Patriots gain some punch in their offense.  The latter is what fans are itching for.

Hopefully, that same itch is there for Rob Gronkowski when Brady comes calling…if he already hasn’t.
