Word has it that former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is close to inking a deal with the WWE.

Rumor has it that former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is in “deep talks” on a contract that will officially link him to the WWE.

So, if Patriots fans and Boston media want to blame Gronk and his indecision about retirement for the team’s lack of tight end production in 2019, they will not have that case in 2020.

In fact, in pursuing his WWE dreams, the future Hall-of-Fame tight end is giving the team every reason to move forward and find his replacement this offseason whether it be through free agency, trade or the 2020 NFL Draft.

With Gronkowski leaving the door open on a possible return to the NFL field, Patriots fans have been looking at the possibility of his return as a savior for the team’s need.  Add the Tom Brady free agency drama to all of it and hopes were high…they really were that No. 87 would suit up in 2020.

Well, anything is possible when it comes to the NFL and the world of entertainment, but for now, Rob Gronkowski has his sights set on entering the ring of World Wrestling Entertainment instead of Gillette Stadium.

While this doesn’t appear to be a full-time gig, as indicated by previous statements, it does at least give the New England Patriots some indication as to where his head is at as far as un-retirement goes and returning to the squad.

Here is what Gronkowski said back in August when asked about a possible WWE marriage, via ESPN:

More from New England Patriots

"“With wresting, I don’t feel like I would be a full-time wrestler, but there is one thing I’m down for.  And that’s do to one crazy match.  Practice if for a little bit, go out there – like in a Royal Rumble – go out there, I got my friend in WWE [Mojo Rawley, practice it and do a full-on WWE match.  I’m not saying when, maybe five years.  I got the rest of my life to do that.  I’ve always dreamed about doing that, just one time, going in there and going full-out.  That may be a possibility, one time, down the road.”"

So, wouldn’t this rumored WWE contract be a few years sooner than even Rob Gronkowski expected?

If so, then why?  Why is he entering the ring now instead of working his way back on the field to help out his buddy Tom Brady, thus improving the team’s chance to re-sign him?

Well, as speculation would have it (at least my speculation), perhaps Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots couldn’t persuade Gronk to return or Belichick has something more long-term up his sleeve like possibly signing Austin Hooper or Hunter Henry.  Perhaps there is a trade in the works for a talent like O.J. Howard.

But, let’s not be too naïve, if Rob Gronkowski wanted to return, he would be Plan A.  At least this offseason, he is giving the Patriots the necessary to time to work out their Plan B and Plan C options.

In summary, this WWE thing does not completely shut the door on a Gronk, Patriots reunion, but the Vince McMahon of the New England Patriots – that being Bill Belichick – would have to share his talent and personality.

That would certainly give a whole other value to the noise surrounding SummerSlam in Boston this coming August. But, now there is no excuse not to go out there and find the next tight end star to wear a New England Patriots uniform Brady or no Tom Brady.
