It was revealed that Sony Michel had offseason surgery and now it appears that his status for New England Patriots training camp is now in question.

Both Sony Michel and the New England Patriots were looking to bounce back in 2020. Both parties underperformed and that led to an early playoff exit.

When looking at Michel it was hard not to be disappointed. After being the catalyst in the Patriots last Super Bowl victory, expectations were high for the running back in 2019. He failed to reach them.

Michel struggled to get going. He would reach the line and then struggle to simply get a yard or two. This is evident when you look at Michel’s drop in yards per attempt.

Fans who were looking for a resurgence from Michel got some bad news on Friday. It appears that Michel went under the knife.

Michel had plenty of injury problems in college and that has transferred to the NFL.  These aren’t the problems you want to have with your starting running back.

Now Michel’s injury problems have made their way to his foot.

Again this is not the news you want to hear. The Patriots are already going to get limited time together. Now Michel’s time will be even more limited if he isn’t healthy by the start of training camp.

Luckily we have learned that Jarrett Stidham has been able to get some work in with his receivers, but it looks like he will have to wait to build chemistry with Michel.

This is a very important season for Michel. He is nearing the end of his contract so he needs to start producing.

Also, the Patriots will be a much more balanced team in 2020. The passing game will not be driving the offense. The running game will get a lot more action this season.

It will be crucial for Michel to get off to a good start. The main thing that fans will want to see is him racking up yards in bunches and not getting stopped at the line. This will especially be important when New England is in the red zone.

If Michel struggles early on we could see Bill Belichick rely on guys like Rex Burkhead and James White to run the ball more. New England also has Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor waiting to show what they can do as well.

So this is definitely not the news that Patriots fans wanted to hear. Hopefully, Michel will be healthy when training camp begins.
