Trade cornerback Stephon Gilmore for a first round draft pick

As much as it would hurt to see Stephon Gilmore go, the writing appears to be on the wall. The New England Patriots reportedly talked to other teams about Gilmore in the offseason, so it wouldn’t be extremely surprising to see him on the move.

More from New England Patriots

Gilmore isn’t having a defensive player of the year caliber season as he did in 2019, but he is still an elite corner. The Patriots could try to net a first round pick from a contending team for him.

Yes, Gilmore is 30-years-old, but he would make a huge impact on a championship team. The Patriots shouldn’t just give him away. If they were offered a first round pick by a team like the Green Bay Packers or the Chicago Bears, they should certainly take it. Anything less, and you have to wonder if it’s worth it.

Gilmore is signed through the 2021 season, and given that the Patriots are projected to have a ton of cap space this offseason it wouldn’t hurt to just keep him and see what the team looks like going into next year. They certainly have money to spend to make improvements in order to potentially become playoff caliber again. Having Gilmore on the roster helps achieve that.

However, if the Patriots are offered a high draft choice for Stephon Gilmore, it would be hard not to at least consider it given the direction of the team at the moment. Since the New England Patriots might be entering a rebuild, they should acquire draft capital whenever possible.
