SP Matt Moore

This one isn’t necessarily one to write home about, but can be a major win-win scenario for the Red Sox. Former Rays, Tigers, and Giants pitcher Matt Moore is attempting an MLB comeback after pitching in Japan for the 2020 season. He was a member of the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks and pitched incredibly well for them at that time. Far better than he was in the MLB.

The lefty totaled a 6-3 record with a 2.65 ERA in 85 innings. Fans may forget that while he struggled for the Tigers and Rangers in 2017 and 2018, he dealt well as a reliever for Detroit in two starts, pitching 10 innings of no-run baseball.

We have seen in the past when the likes of a Miles Mikolas returns to MLB, they are an improved pitcher. The same could be said for Moore, and that makes Bloom’s time with the Rays that much more important.

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo has reported that the Red Sox have been in contact with the left-hander as he attempts to make a comeback, and he seems to be a perfect option to help round out the rotation. This would be a low money, probable one year offer that can very well get him at his best as he tries to show he belongs in Major League Baseball again.

When the Red Sox miss out on a Corey Kluber, these are the types of risk you may need to take to try and find a diamond in the rough. Moore isn’t the sexiest name available but has the potential to be one of the finer signings of the offseason.
