Round 3 No 80: Kellen Mond – Quarterback, Texas A&M

(Patriots trade No. 96 and a 2022 third round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for pick No. 65)

No one expected the New England Patriots to sign the top two tight ends in free agency in Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry and no one will see this coming from Bill Belichick.

Not only does he trade up to grab Davis Mills, but he will also see another quarterback the team likes sliding down the board and will trade up to the top of the third round to select Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond.

More from New England Patriots

Like Davis, Mond has great size at 6-foot-3 and 211 pounds but is much more athletic with similar arm strength.  He is also a confident quarterback coming out of college with room to grow obviously.

In selecting both Davis and Mond, which Belichick will be able to do following his free agency spurge, the Patriots will have two young quarterbacks with different abilities competing to be the next guy depending on which direction the offense will go.

While Mond has demonstrated some inaccuracy and indecisiveness in big games, his athletic ability, big arm and extreme confidence makes him interesting enough to take this gamble.

Going back to the draft where the Washington Football team selected both Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins, the New England Patriots will create an opportunity where they can cash in on which ever quarterback doesn’t win the starting job.

In all, the draft is deep enough to do this and it could set the team up nicely in the future if both players continue to grow as expected.
