The Boston Red Sox will either make a big splash at the MLB Trade Deadline or make some minor moves to keep the wheels turning.

Of course, we are hoping for a big splash, if it makes sense.  With a team like the Tampa Bay Rays already making a big move in adding Nelson Cruz, the Red Sox do need to counter in some way with the Rays breathing down their throat in the AL East.

Or maybe they don’t.  With Chris Sale inching his way back to the Major League level following Tommy John surgery, perhaps Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom feels he has the reinforcements he needs already in the organization.

Bloom does, however, owe it to this team to see what’s out there to strengthen some of their weaknesses.  Maybe what’s out there will make him splurge a bit to put his team over the top.

More from Red Sox Rumors

Maybe that splurge comes in adding another slugger to the lineup while adding depth in the outfield.  Here are three big splash players who would do that.

Red Sox big splash MLB Trade Deadline targets: Mitch Haniger

If the Seattle Mariners are sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline, an outfield slugger who would fit nicely with the Boston Red Sox is Mitch Haniger.

With 25 homers and 62 RBI, Haniger would add even more punch in the middle of that Red Sox lineup and would give them a solid outfield of Hunter Renfroe, Kike Hernandez/Jarren Duran and Haniger  Someone would have to shift to left field, but there is plenty of versatility in that quartet to pull that off.

This one is a stretch since the Mariners are inching their way back into contention for the playoffs, but his current contract status makes him very affordable for the Red Sox who could add a big bat to the lineup for $3.01 million.

The big question is, would Hanigerr be the kind of player to put the Red Sox over the top?  If he’s not, then this next player certainly is.
