The New England Patriots three top players to watch for against the New York Jets could very likely be the keys to the Patriots first win of the season.

The heartbreaking loss to the Miami Dolphins, which kept the red, white, blue, and silver from again topping the AFC East, must have left a bad taste in the mouths of the Patriots’ players.

That game was a win given away. A late fumble by Damien Harris switched the end result from a likely win to a terrible loss. His position coach, Ivan Fears, wasn’t at all happy.

The team as a whole deserved a better outcome. So the Patriots and their fans are now on to New York to face the Jets with their new young star quarterback, Zach Wilson.

We have no other choice but to move on. Here are three players from New England to watch for against the Jets, who may just be the keys to the game Sunday.

New England Patriots players to watch vs the Jets – No. 3: Mac Jones

Might as well pencil Mac Jones into every week’s top three players for New England. As Mac Jones goes, so ultimately will the Patriots. Maybe it will begin with a win this Sunday.

Doubters must have been amazed at the poise (after his first attempted pass) the young slinger showed against a ferocious Miami defense. This space wasn’t. He was sensational as expected.

Completing 74.3 percent of passes for any NFL quarterback is a real feat. To do so in your first game ever is an almost unheard-of success.

Detractors say his passes were mostly short ones. Who cares? They were completions and moved the ball downfield. He also had a QB rating of 102.6. Not bad at all!

Mac Jones was also named Pro Football Focus’s highest-rated of all rookie quarterbacks Sunday. They know their stuff.

This space has predicted (not always/usually? right) lots of buyers’ remorse for NFL teams that passed up on Mac Jones in the NFL draft. He’s already proving that one to be on target.

Can you hear the teardrops falling like rain in San Francisco? They passed on Jones when it seemed like they had traded way up the draft board to get him. OOPS!

If Mac Jones can get better every week with more experience, how high can he rise? We’ll see beginning on Sunday in New York.
