The 2021 regular season didn’t go as planned for the Boston College Eagles. Injuries, struggles on offense, and some close losses had the Eagles (6-6) winning only two of their final eight games.

Still, there was much to be proud of as Boston College awaits their bowl game destination.

There was a win over SEC opponent Missouri and a defense that kept the Eagles in games before injuries caught up to them.

As good as things were — including placing 12 players on All-ACC teams — there was disappointment to balance it out. Wide receiver Zay Flowers (44 rec., 746 yards, 5 td) had numbers all down from his stellar sophomore season. (Though some of that can be attributed to failure to get the ball into his hands more.)

While we await NFL-decisions by Flowers and quarterback Phil Jurkovec — and a growing transfer portal — here are three players who stood out in the 2021 regular season.

Return of the Boston College Eagles ground game

Noted as a player to watch entering the 2021 season, running back Pat Garwo III rose to the occasion. Admittedly, I missed on the other two players who I predicted would slide into bigger roles this season.

Garwo, however, proved to be a shining star. He broke away from the trio of running backs early on to secure as spot as the top running back, rumbling his way to a 1,000-yard season.

Currently, the sophomore running back has 1,045 yards on the ground. Garwo scored seven rushing touchdowns and averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Travis Levy did most of the work in the passing game so there wasn’t a whole lot of opportunity for Garwo, who finished with three receptions for 19 yards.

Part of Garwo’s success can also be assigned to an experienced and talented offensive line. All five were selected to an All-ACC team, with two first-teamers in Zion Johnson and Alec Lindstrom.

Definitely looking forward to Garwo’s growth, especially if he can find that breakaway speed once hitting the second level of the defense. Really excited for his future as Garwo is poised for even greater things.
