NFL rumors: Patriots should go all in on Deebo Samuel (but they won’t)
The NFL’s top young wide receivers are giving the New England Patriots every opportunity to finally land a No. 1 receiver and right the wrong that was the 2019 NFL Draft, but the question is will Bill Belichick bite on any of the young receivers seeking big contract extensions.
Naw, the Patriots are cheap, Belichick doesn’t value the wide receiver position and the team won’t give up draft capital when they have so many other needs. Those are the reactions when it comes to the possibility of landing a Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf or A.J. Brown.
While the San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks obviously want to keep those players, money talks and so does culture. In the case of Samuel, the fourth-year explosive receiver seems to be after a little more than a lucrative contract. He wants to be used in a better way. He wants to be appreciated for his skills; he wants to be the man.
New England Patriots have a chance to right a wrong with Deebo Samuel
Well, the Patriots need a wide receiver to be the man. Honestly, a player who they should’ve drafted instead of the first-round bust known as N’Keal Harry, Samuel would give Mac Jones that ultimate target.
No offense to newly acquired target DeVante Parker or Kendrick Bourne, but the Patriots have an opportunity to right a wrong. They have a shot at a player they liked coming out of that 2019 NFL Draft and a player who thought he was going to be a Patriot.
Ahead of that draft, the South Carolina product was very confident Belichick was drafting him after a visit to Gillette Stadium. Not only did he feel good about the visit, he got to see a different side of Belichick the coach.
"“I thought [Belichick] was like a real, real serious coach, like don’t smile a lot. When I met him, he was a little laughy and gave me a little smile and I mean we had a real good conversation there,” Samuel told the NFL Network back in 2019 ahead of the draft."
Is it fate or just wishful hope that Deebo Samuel may end up playing for Bill Belichick after all?
If the New England Patriots want him, they can get him. They can give up the No. 21 pick overall along with a player or two to make it happen. Yes, the New York Jets may have more to give, but when it comes to landing that contract extension is Samuel more willing to go to the Jets long term or the Patriots?

That really is the question. We can point to the salary cap, but the Patriots have the cap space for next season to get Deebo Samuel in the building and work something out beyond this season. They can also throw in a future or even another pick this season if the 49ers take on the contract of Nelson Agholor or/and Harry.
So, it can work if the Patriots are confident an established weapon like Samuel is more of a sure bet than whoever they would select with that No. 21 pick. Knowing Belichick, he would be trading down anyway. So why not go all-in to give Mac Jones the weapons he needs to make a leap in 2022?
Belichick’s stubbornness and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s wallet are two big reasons they won’t, but if Samuel and other top receivers are requesting trades, us Patriots fans can dream, right?
One of these times, they will shock the NFL and pull off another Randy Moss and we won’t see it coming.
