New England Patriots training camp is still a couple of weeks away so there is still time make changes to the roster. One of the easiest ways to accomplis that is through a trade, and there are some trade candidates on New England’s roster currently that stand out. Trading for trading’s sake is senseless, yet trading to strengthen in positions of need or to accumulate future draft capital is the polar opposite.

The state of the Patriots defense definitely warrants trading a few players for value on that side of the ball. The defense could certainly use all the help they can get. Draft picks in return are always helpful, as well. There are at least three players who other teams may be interested in. All three happen to be on offense, ostensibly the team’s strength.

Questions might quite rationally be asked, why weaken an area of strength? It’s a good question. So let’s explore if trading three contributing offensive players might be worthwhile to add a defensive player or two or to add future draft picks. The defensive side of the ball needs to be bolstered for certain, and you can never have enough draft picks.

Let’s start with a player who has been the subject of lots of commentaries in the media this pre-season and whose role seemingly has shifted on an area of critical importance to the team, the offensive line.
