In less than four weeks, the New England Patriots will be opening up their regular season in Miami, against the Dolphins. They just had longtime running back James “Sweet Feet” White retire last week. Now, the hits keep on coming. This time, it’s the defense that is suffering a loss.

Cornerback Joejuan Williams is going to be out for the 2022 season with a shoulder injury. The 2022 season would’ve been Williams fourth season as a member of the New England Patriots?

Did Joejuan Williams save his future roster spot with the New England Patriots?

I know this question seems like a weird one to ask. But could Williams injuring his shoulder have helped save his job? It’s not a crazy thought.

A lot of experts and fans thought Williams could end up getting cut by the Patriots before the start of the regular season. So now, Williams will probably end up going on the season-ending IR. This could also assure him at least one more chance in the 2023 training camp.

What does Joejuan Williams injury mean for the New England Patriots?

Well…to be completely honest…not really much!

The New England Patriots were always going to have questions about their corners. This was especially evident after J.C. Jackson left in the off-season to take a huge deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. So now the question was going to be, who steps up in Jackson’s absence?

Joejuan Williams has spent three seasons with the Patriots. Simply put, his first three years have been significantly underwhelming.

In three seasons, Williams has 44 total tackles. He doesn’t have an interception or a sack. He does have eight pass deflections to his credit.

But the point is that Williams injury won’t mean much to the Patriots for this season anyway. He was having a really bad training camp, constantly getting beat by receivers in drills. Williams always looks a step behind his assignment in the actual games. There isn’t much promise there!

The bottom line on Joejuan Williams with the New England Patriots

Here’s the bottom line on Williams. It ALWAYS stinks to see a player on your favorite team get injured. Nobody wants injuries. But it’s not like Mac Jones or Matthew Judon getting hurt.

The fourth year cornerback is a complementary piece for the Patriots at best. He’s honestly a third or fourth corner on this team alone!

Jalen Mills looks more comfortable in his second season with the Patriots. Marcus Jones is turning heads after being selected in the third round of this past NFL draft. Terrance Mitchell is having himself a nice training camp and making a case to be the number one corner for this season.

We’re all hoping that Joejuan Williams gets healthy. Shoulder injuries are tough no matter what sport athletes play.

But make no mistake about it, 2023 might be Joejuan Williams last chance to show he can significantly contribute to the Patriots. Otherwise, he could get released and be looking for work elsewhere.
