Boston Celtics legend hypes rumors of a Kevin Durant blockbuster trade
If it was up to one very outspoken Boston Celtics legend, the team should go all in on a blockbuster deal for Kevin Durant even if it means parting ways with Jaylen Brown.
While the Celtics official Twitter account seemed to put those rumors to rest in a tweet endorsing another NBA title run with Brown still in the mix, the Durant to Boston chatter continues and Cedric Maxwell added more smoke to the fire or at the very least more bulletin board disrespect in the eyes of Jaylen Brown supporters.
Like NBC Sports Boston analysts Brian Scalabrine, who initially stirred up the Durant rumors, Maxwell is also fully onboard basically saying the trade would be a no-brainer.
"“Jaylen Brown is one of my favorite players,” Maxwell said during his podcast. “But if that trade were to happen I would be like ‘yep, that’s a good trade’. Because Red Auerbach said it best, you cannot fall in love with the assets of the players.”"
The Boston Celtics trading for Kevin Durant is a high stakes dice game
The question is would have Red Auerbach already pulled the trigger on such a deal. The answer is more than likely yes as the Celtics legendary coach and front office genius was known for making the right moves at the right time. He took risks that paid off and that is something Maxwell is saying Stevens should do in this case because even at 34 years of age, Kevin Durant would make the Celtics a hard team to beat.
"“I think if you’re the Celtics, and if you’re Brad Stevens, do you want to roll those dice? I think that’s the question that comes to mind,” Maxwell continued. “If I’m them and you’re asking me, those dice are already rolled.”"
Well then. While Durant is now shooting down rumors that he would retire rather than play for the Brooklyn Nets next season, the Boston Celtics really have to focus on whether their march forward to another shot at an NBA championship will come with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown leading the way or the tandem of Durant and Tatum potentially dominating the league.

Either way, the Celtics be primed as a team to beat although the fanbase would be split. With seeing what Durant is doing to the Nets organization, there is a fear that he will bring the same turmoil to Boston if he decides he’s not happy.
If the Celtics do roll those dice and it that gambled dismantled what the team has built, would the Scalabrine’s and Maxwell’s of the world still endorse the move? Obviously, it will be easy to look back if it works or doesn’t work and either pump fists if you are a supporter of the deal or point fingers if you aren’t a believer in Durant, but it is really about Stevens.
For the Celtics president of basketball operations to pull the trigger and part ways for Brown, he must know Kevin Durant is willing to buy in and fully commit to the organization similar to the way Kevin Garnett did in 2007 when he was paired with Paul Pierce.
Could Durant form that same magic when paired with Jayson Tatum?
Talent-wise all Boston Celtics fans know the answer, it’s that other stuff Kevin Durant brings to the table that is causing hesitation amongst the skeptical.
