Patriots: Why Bailey Zappe should get the nod over Mac Jones on #MNF
The New England Patriots have a big game coming up against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. This comes after a big win against the Cleveland Browns, on the road, to get back to a .500 record at 3-3.
We still are dealing with the different opinions in who should be starting at quarterback: Mac Jones when healthy or Bailey Zappe because of his recent production.
There was the tweet today from Jeff Howe that had a lot of ears perked up all around New England.
So Mac Jones could hypothetically start on Monday night for the New England Patriots. But honestly, Bailey Zappe should be the starter for this game for a multitude of reasons.
The New England Patriots are playing the Chicago Bears
This should be a very easy win for the Patriots.
You have an inferior Bears team that has so many problems. Justin Fields continues to show that he is a mediocre NFL quarterback. They have one good receiver in Darnell Mooney. The pass rush is very feeble. Their running game is decent with David Montgomery. But the big thing is, the Bears can’t score points.
If the defense shows up and Bailey Zappe plays a B- or better type of game, the Patriots win this game easily. The defense can get to Justin Fields and can shut down the Bears offense. Score 21 or more points and you should be just fine.
The New England Patriots play the New York Jets next week at MetLife
This is significantly important for the Patriots. After the Bears game, the Patriots play the Jets on a short week, at MetLife Stadium.
But this isn’t just any type of regular Patriots-Jets game. The Jets are actually respectable this year. Dare I say…good!

Having Mac ready for this game is more important than risking him if he’s not close to 100%, in a game against Chicago. Bailey Zappe can handle the quarterback responsibilities for one more week.
The New England Patriots can’t take any chances with Mac
Patriots fans should consider themselves lucky to not have lost their starting quarterback for the whole season.
Mac Jones ankle looked really rough after injuring it against the Ravens. We all saw the clips of Mac’s face, screaming out in pain! Imagine if he was out for an extended period of time!
Zappe has proven to be a valuable backup. He’s thrown one interception in a little more than 11 quarters of NFL action. The kid from Western Kentucky can play!
So you can ultimately get the best of both worlds here.
Mac gets more time to make sure that ankle is 100%. Zappe continues to zip and zap his way to wins for the Patriots. The Patriots ride into MetLife with momentum, in the form of a three game winning streak. Everybody wins!
So to me, it’s really simple. Play the kid for one more week, get the win, and have Mac Jones ready for a significantly huge week 8 tilt with the Jets. Sounds like a winning formula to me!
