It’s been a disappointing offseason for the Boston Red Sox so far.  How can Chaim Bloom redeem himself after losing top free agents Xander Bogaerts and Nathan Eovaldi?

Well, the Red Sox Chief Baseball officer could start by landing some young, established talent via trades.  One possibility out there is San Diego Padres outfielder Trent Grisham who is reportedly on the trade block per MLB.com:

"“The Padres are reportedly considering offloading either Ha-Seong Kim or Trent Grisham to make room for Bogaerts to take over at shortstop, a move which would likely require Tatis taking on a more permanent role in the outfield.”"

Ironically, it is the Padres signing of Bogaerts that has the team listening to offers for Grisham, who is coming off a down season offensively, but landed his second Gold Glove.  Although he hit just .184, his 17 homers show he has some pop in his bat and a change in scenery could at least get him going at the plate again, especially playing half his games at Fenway Park.

Trent Grisham would give the Red Sox defense, depth and potential at the plate

While this wouldn’t be the splash move the team needs, it could be one of those smaller moves Bloom makes that play out huge as the season goes on.  Given the fact that the team was in on Andrew Benintendi, the team is in on an outfielder who would add defensive reliability in the field and provide another left-handed option at the plate.

To obtain Grisham, the Red Sox may have to part ways with a starting pitcher, something they can’t afford to do right now unless they find a way to re-sign Michael Wacha or bring in another front to middle of the rotation pitcher.  That could make a starter like Nick Pivetta expendable if the team is confident in the health of Chris Sale and James Paxton who are projected starters.

If it will cost more than that or top pitching prospects, Bloom may shy away from a potential deal unless the Red Sox feel Grisham would be a good fit in an outfield of Masataka Yoshida, Enrique Hernandez and Alex Verdugo.  Acquiring and outfielder like Grisham would give the team some insurance in case Yoshida struggles in his first season in Major League Baseball.

Another positive is that the Red Sox could use Hernandez at second base if indeed Trevor Story makes the switch to shortstop.  So, there are some pros to a potential deal.  But, as is always the case, the Boston Red Sox will have competition as the Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies are teams rumored to be interested.

You can also never count out the New York Yankees.

To conclude, with his youth, defense and upside, Trent Grisham is the type of player Bloom should have high interest in, especially if the Boston Red Sox have any intention of trading Verdugo sometime this offseason or by the MLB Trade Deadline.
