Boston Red Sox are messing up this Rafael Devers situation
As we all know, the Boston Red Sox don’t like to pay their homegrown talent. Jon Lester was the first of the heartache that occurred within the past ten years.
Then of course, there was the Mookie Betts situation. Andrew Benintendi got traded. Then this off-season, Xander Bogaerts left in free agency. That leaves Rafael Devers as the lone survivor.
The Red Sox avoided arbitration with Devers on Tuesday as he and the Red Sox agreed upon a one year deal for $17.5 million. This is a good step, hoping the Red Sox will actually be negotiating a legitimate long-term contract to the star third baseman. But overall, the Red Sox are messing up this Rafael Devers situation entirely!
The Boston Red Sox should have Rafael Devers signed long-term by now!
It’s crazy that I have to continuously say and write this sentence out into the universe. The Boston Red Sox should have this guy signed by now! I mean seriously, how many times do we have to go through this with players until Red Sox ownership gets the hint?
Devers is a guy that can be a mainstay in the Red Sox lineup for years to come. Sure, the last five seasons, you had J.D. Martinez to help Devers out. Yes, Bogaerts was in there too. But now, what’s your excuse?
You’ve had so much time now to negotiate and get a deal done for the long-term. The best you can do at this moment is assure what we all already knew? That Devers would be back for the 2023 season? What good is it?!
What is the Boston Red Sox backup plan?
If the Red Sox can’t get the deal done with Devers, which a lot of people think they won’t; what is the backup plan?

In today’s game, you need to be able to buy the players necessary to win. Who is going to want to come to Boston on a big contract if their philosophy is to not pay their star players?
If the Red Sox think a bunch of veterans on short-term contracts is going to work, they have a rude awakening coming. 2013 worked, but that was an anomaly.
With high expectations comes a high payroll. The Red Sox have a high enough payroll to do whatever they want. So who will they spend the money on if they don’t want to give it to Devers?
The bottom line with Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox
This signing to avoid arbitration is a good start. The value of Devers is higher in 2023 than it has been in any season he’s played thus far in his MLB career. But that’s not enough!
John Henry was getting booed at the Winter Classic yesterday for not paying Devers, and rightfully so! Start getting this team back to contending for championships.
If John Henry doesn’t want to do that, then fine. Sell the team to somebody that will actually do what needs to be done to get back to a championship pedigree.
