So far this off-season, the New England Patriots have made some noise.

They basically made Jerod Mayo their associate head coach, keeping him from leaving for other opportunities around the NFL.

Then, there was the hiring of old friend Bill O’Brien to be the Patriots offensive coordinator for the 2023 season.

The next item of business is to look ahead to free agency and the 2023 NFL draft. An attractive name that has come up is Northwestern tackle Peter Skoronski.

Should the Patriots make Skoronski a draft target for April’s big event? Let’s discuss.

New England Patriots would get a good, young tackle in Peter Skoronski

The 6’4, 315 pound lineman from Northwestern has had quite the career in the Big Ten.

He was named to the Second-Team All-Big Ten in 2020 and made it to the First-Team All-Big Ten the following two seasons. Not to mention, he was named as a unanimous All-American in 2022.

Skoronski is tough, athletic, and very smart for his position. Those sound like qualities that fit right into what the Patriots are looking for in a linemen.

With the Patriots offensive line, the center and guard positions are in good hands. David Andrews, Michael Onwenu, and Cole Strange should have no problem in 2023, so long as they stay healthy.

Trent Brown and Isaiah Wynn were woefully disappointing in 2022 and it looks like the Patriots are trying to upgrade at the tackle position. So a guy like Skoronski could be another young piece brought into this Patriots core. Then you’d basically have almost all of your line taken care of, going into the next season.

New England Patriots need to better protect Mac Jones

Look it’s no secret. When you’re in the NFL and your team’s quarterback is more of a pocket passer; you need to give him good protection.

Mac Jones fits perfectly into this pocket passer category. When the o-line gave Mac time to throw, he was extremely effective. When Mac was rushed, he couldn’t get anything going.

Bringing in the Northwestern product will sure up that o-line more and give Jones more time to break down an NFL defense. Especially when that rookie lineman is exceptional in the pass protection game.

If you want to win in 2023, why not get a lineman that can help improve a place that needs it and can make the quarterback more effective? Sounds like a no-brainer to me!

The bottom line with Peter Skoronski and the New England Patriots

With a lineman as accomplished in college as Skoronski, it would be a slam dunk if the Patriots ended up with him on draft night.

dark. Next. How Bill Belichick killed 'The Patriot Way'

Like I mentioned before, the combination of Trent Brown and Isaiah Wynn didn’t get it done last season. Get Skoronski in here and get the other tackle in free agency. See what Mike McGlinchey wants to get out of San Francisco.

The bottom line is that the Patriots need to focus on the tackles in this draft. With a mid-first round pick in their hands, they can use it to their advantage. If they could (dare I say!) trade up draft night to get the standout Northwestern tackle, I’d do it. But we’ll see!
