We begged for it. We pleaded for it. New England Patriots fans all over the world were hoping that we would get our guy to run the offense in 2023. Well Pats nation…we got him.

Word officially got out today that Bill O’Brien will return to the Patriots as their new offensive coordinator.

The Dorchester, MA native broke into the Patriots organization in 2007 as an offensive assistant. He worked with the wide receivers in 2008 before being the QB coach from 2009-2011. O’Brien also had the OC job for the 2011 season with the Patriots.

He also has head coaching experience in college (at Penn State), and at the NFL level (with Houston from 2014-2020). The last two seasons, O’Brien served as the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The New England Patriots have a legitimate OC in Bill O’Brien

That heading felt so good to type! The New England Patriots actually have a legitimate OC with bringing Bill O’Brien back on board.

This is exactly what you wanted as a Pats fan. A guy that has actually worked with an offense and succeeded at a high level.

Remember what B.O.B. did with the New England’s offense in the 2011 season? He brought them to a Super Bowl. Sure, the Patriots lost to the Giants for a second time in the Super Bowl. But at least they were able to get there!

The New England Patriots have a rejuvenated Mac Jones with Bill O’Brien

Let’s just say Mac Jones is extremely excited to have O’Brien in as his new offensive coordinator.

I mean honestly, why wouldn’t he be excited? Think about everything that the poor kid had to go through in this past season!

From being injured for several games, to a severe regression, to being booed at his own home stadium by the fans, to having to deal with a lack of an OC. The two year NFL quarterback has had to go through a lot!

But now, he gets a guy that he’s somewhat familiar with, to work together with in 2023. Keep in mind, Mac Jones helped O’Brien learn the Alabama playbook before he went to the Patriots. They’ve experience each other before. Familiarity always helps!

The bottom line with the New England Patriots and Bill O’Brien

This is a great hire for everyone involved. The Patriots get an OC, Bill O’Brien gets the chance to be back in the NFL, everyone wins! But now the question is: what’s next?

The new Patriots offensive coordinator needs to have some pieces in place. A #1 wide receiver perhaps? Could Deandre Hopkins work out? I know Hopkins and O’Brien had their differences in the past. But who knows! Times are different now.

Could the Patriots fill in a need at offensive line? What will the Pats do to improve their already solid defense? These are legitimate questions that this organization still needs to answer.

But now? The offense at least has a capable mind behind the wheel. I already can’t wait for the first workouts where O’Brien works with the offense! The possibilities are endless.

So good on the Patriots and welcome back home, Bill O’Brien!
