Everyone is talking about what the New England Patriots need to upgrade on the offensive side of the ball. Rightfully so. That offense was disastrous and feeble. But what nobody is talking about is how the Patriots can improve on the defensive side of the ball.

Their pass rushing is in a really good position. With guys like Matt Judon, Christian Barmore, and Josh Uche leading the charge; the future for Patriots pass rushing is bright. But what about the cornerback position?

Jonathan Jones is an unrestricted free agent entering his age 30 season. That was the Patriots number one corner in 2022. Could a guy like Jalen Ramsey come in and fix that?

It looks like the LA Rams are planning on trading Ramsey in the next few weeks. So if that’s the case, maybe the Patriots should pick up the phone and see what the asking price is for the 5-foot-10 corner.

It’s no secret that Jalen Ramsey is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. It’s also no secret that the Patriots defense could benefit even more from having the former Florida State Seminole in Foxborough.

Ramsey had 18 pass breakups last season along with four interceptions. He’s a six-time Pro-bowl corner along with being a three-time All-Pro. The talent is there.

With a team having their other corners being Jalen Mills, Myles Bryant, and the pairing of Marcus and Jack Jones; adding a stud corner wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

But will they be able to afford Ramsey?

The Patriots have a little bit north of $30 million to spend in free agency this off-season. Bringing in Ramsey would require spending about half of that, unless the contract was restructured of course.

Not only that, you’re probably going to have to get rid of some picks here. If it’s third round or later for the picks, then that’s totally fine. One second rounder? Okay fine. But if it’s a first rounder, I wouldn’t go there. Stick to the thirds or later and see if the Rams would be willing to budge.

It’s a long shot, but it’s definitely worth picking up the phone and at least inquiring about the move.

With the Rams seemingly willing to make this type of trade, it’d be disrespectful to at least not entertain it with a phone call. Who knows? Maybe Ramsey needs a fresh start to truly show us all why he’s a multiple time Pro-bowl and All-pro selection.

This would solve one problem for the New England Patriots. And of course, you have the master of restructuring contracts in Bill Belichick. He’d find some way to get that contract down and have more money in cap space to spend.

Plus, if Jonathan Jones leaves; you do NOT want Jalen Mills being your number one corner heading into 2023. What will happen when the Patriots play Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill next season? I don’t even want to know.

Pick up the phone, Bill. See what it would take to make Jane Ramsey a New England Patriot.
