The New England Patriots need to upgrade their wide receiver position. There’s no “ifs”, “ands”, or “buts” about it.

The wide receiving production was below average for the Patriots in 2022. Some of it was talent. Some of it was the offense run by Matt Patricia. But all together, it was all a big pile of yuck.

So how do you make the receiving core better? You can make the big trade for a guy like Deandre Hopkins. Or, you could look into the 2023 NFL Draft class.

One name that is extremely intriguing is Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers. He had a monster senior season for the Eagles in 2022.

So could the 5-foot-10 wide receiver be a major target on the Patriots draft board? Personally, I think he could be someone the Patriots keep a close eye on come draft night.

New England Patriots getting a productive receiver in Zay Flowers

Zay Flowers made the most of his last college season with the BC Eagles.

Flowers caught 78 receptions, for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior campaign. In his entire BC career, Flowers had over 3,000 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns.

Playing in the tough ACC conference with the likes of Clemson and Florida State, those are pretty good numbers.

Could those relate to the NFL? We don’t know.

But what we do know is that the speedy Flowers made some noise at the college level. Now we need to see if he can make an impact at the NFL level.

New England Patriots getting Zay Flowers for Mac Jones

If third year Patriots quarterback Mac Jones wants to have a successful 2023 season, he could use a good receiver like Zay Flowers in the fold.

With the realistic possibility of Jakobi Meyers being gone this off-season, Flowers could fit nicely into that slot receiver role.

We know that Flowers is fast and can get the ball into the end zone. For a Patriots team that struggled to get into the end zone offensively in 2022, that can be a step in the right direction.

Along with other receivers like Devante Parker and Tyquan Thornton in the fold, adding Flowers will bring more speed to a Patriots team that desperately needs it.

Adding another solid route runner with plus speed can only help the former Alabama quarterback. Not to mention that Flowers could be a big piece in a Bill O’Brien led offense!

The bottom line with Zay Flowers and the New England Patriots

If the Patriots aren’t going to make the big splash at receiver via free agency or a trade, then Zay Flowers is an answer to the receiving problem via the draft.

Next. Thoughts & probability of a Deandre Hopkins trade. dark

Patriots fans need to see some separation and proper route running from wide receivers. Zay Flowers brings both of those to the table.

For a position that is becoming so prominent in the NFL offensive game today, drafting a receiver like Flowers could be essential to the Patriots future.

Then again. knowing Bill Belichick; he could very well trade the 14th overall pick for more picks in the later rounds. Who knows!
