The new NFL year is scheduled to start on March 15. That means that NFL free agency will be up and running for all teams to strengthen their rosters. One team that is expected to be active during the free agency period is the New England Patriots.

The Patriots have close to $33 million to spend in this year’s free agency. They’ll surely be spending it on defense, with maybe a splash or two at tackle or maybe even wide receiver.

But one position that doesn’t need a lot of touching up is quarterback with the duo of Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. This leaves no room for Brian Hoyer, and the Patriots realized that on Saturday morning.

The Patriots let Brian Hoyer know that they intend to cut him before the start of the new full NFL year. The team is expected to add a third quarterback at some point this off-season.

New England Patriots have Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe over Brian Hoyer

When it’s all said and done, it’s safe to say that Mac Jones and Zappe are sufficient enough to be in the QB room without Hoyer.

We all know the deal with Jones. Great rookie year, horrible sophomore year, hopefully will have a massive turnaround in year three. The good play is in there with the former Alabama quarterback. We’ve seen it!

We also know that Zappe is more than good enough to serve as the backup quarterback. Zappe went 2-0 in his two starts for the Patriots in 2022. He also almost won the Green Bay game when all hope seemed to be lost.

Simply put, the Patriots really don’t need Hoyer in the QB room anymore. That’s money that can be used for a different position of need come free agency time.

New England Patriots bring Brian Hoyer in as a coach?

The most logical step for Hoyer is to jump onto the Patriots staff as a coach.

Wouldn’t Bill Belichick love to have Hoyer still helping out the quarterbacks from the sidelines? Yes, I know Bill O’Brien is running both the offense and the quarterbacks right now. But maybe Hoyer potentially coming to the sidelines could be a win-win.

O’Brien can then totally focus on the offense while Hoyer could continue to help develop both Mac and Zappe. This sounds like something that should’ve happened yesterday!

This move was to be expected. The Patriots need to clear for more cap space by any means necessary. Plus, there’s just no spot for Brian Hoyer, the NFL quarterback, on this current roster.

With free agency being competitive now as it ever has been, every dollar counts. So with Hoyer’s money, that can be the difference between getting a player to New England and watching him go elsewhere.

Hoyer served his purpose the last few years. He mentored a young Mac Jones and Zappe. He did the very best he could when he got his minimal chances to play. Now it’s time to go in a different direction. Nothing personal, just strictly business.
