Boston Celtics outlasted by NY Knicks in 2OT despite Tatum’s 40 piece
By Zachary McMahon
The Boston Celtics lost a thriller on Sunday night at TD Garden against the New York Knicks, 131-129 in a Double Overtime thriller. The Celtics were coming off a loss to the Brooklyn Nets where they allowed a 28-point comeback. The New York Knicks have a 9-game winning streak as they’re one of the hottest teams in the NBA right now.
The Celtics have lost their previous two games against the New York Knicks, in Overtime on January 26 and February 27, and are now 3-1 against the Knicks, who could be a semifinal match for the Celtics in the playoffs as the Knicks are in 5th place in the Eastern Conference.
Robert Williams III was out of the game for the Celtics with a strained left hamstring and Malcolm Brogdon was out with right ankle soreness. Robert Williams would usually be at Center, but Al Horford moved to Center in place of Williams. Jayson Tatum would move to power forward and Jaylen Brown to Small Forward to make room for Derrick White to start at Shooting Guard.
This was the first double overtime game for both teams this season. Last season the Celtics had two double-overtime games where they lost both games against the Knicks and the Wizards. The last time the Celtics won an Double-Overtime games was on February 13, 2020 against the LA Clippers 141-133.
All five Celtics starters were in double-figures including Al Horford with 20 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Boston Celtics allowed Immanuel Quickley to score 38
Immanuel Quickley started in the place for injured Jalen Brunson. Brunson was out with a sore left foot.
Quickley scored a career-high of 38 points for the New York Knicks. He also had 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in the game. Quickley played 55 minutes for the Knicks and didn’t get benched at all in the 2nd half and overtimes.
Quickley scored the first seven points of the second overtime on a three-pointer and a driving layup. Quickley also scored the tying shot for the Knicks to stay in the game at the end of Overtime, after Tatum missed a layup to win the game.
I think Quickley is the only reason the Knicks stayed in the game tonight, if not then the Celtics would’ve won the game. But, this season the Knicks have been playing the Celtics tough.
Boston Celtics player of the game: Jayson Tatum
Jayson Tatum has gone for another 40-point night the second 40-point game in the month of March so far as he scored 43 in the win against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Tatum played 40 minutes and grabbed 11 rebounds as a double-double, which is his 3rd straight game achieving the double-double. He also had 3 straight double-double at the end of January against the Knicks, Heat and Lakers.
If the Celtics had better clock management in Overtime, Tatum would’ve had time and gotten a better shot for the win.
Tomorrow, The Celtics will travel to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers for a one-game pit stop at 7 pm tip-off.
