The New England Patriots receiving corps is average and is likely to get worse, as the team’s best, Jakobi Meyers may not be bought back.

They need to improve that position and can’t seem to get it right. The last major draft attempt was N’Keal Harry in the 2019 first round. He was a complete bust. (Note: If a receiver’s best quality is making contested catches, Hello! That means he can’t get open! Stay away!)

So now the team needs to add to a receiving corps that will likely be without free agency major money flop, Nelson Agholor, and maybe others on this mediocre unit.

So, the question to be asked is, what should the team do to try to remedy this situation? One way is to sign older wideouts who are probably on the downside of their careers.

That is patently the wrong way to go. Let’s explore what the team actually should do.

New England Patriots need to get quality young receivers

Why should the New England Patriots avoid the older, downside of their career receivers? That’s an easy question to ask and answer, they flop more than not. Save the money.

The team needs to invest in top wideouts not try to scrape them together from the bottom of the NFL player barrel. Now the New England Patriots have proven to be incapable of actually drafting a No. One young wide receiver who can do anything at all. That’s their record for the most part for decades.

They are poor and that’s putting it mildly. That inability cost the team multiple Super Bowl titles and still costs them today. They need to change their approach (strategy is too strong a term for the New England Patriots personnel operation.).

New England Patriots need a realistic strategy

First, though many are suggesting or projecting this, they should absolutely, positively stay away from drafting a wide receiver with their top two picks. It won’t work.

Alternatively, the way to do this is to draft later on and hope for the best, or even sign Undrafted Free Agents, one of the few areas of their personnel operation that actually has the ability to deliver.

The preferred way to get quality is through trade or free agency. Find an established, younger wide receiving talented and pay the freight for a No. One. Might be Tee Higgins or Jerry Jeudy, whoever. Pay the freight and get a young talented guy.

Next. New England Patriots offensive approach is stuck in the past. dark

Forget older guys like DeAndre Hopkins, Chosen Anderson, or Allen Robinson. They’re on the downside. JuJu Smith-Schuster is still younger and might be worth a flier, though it seems like he may stay put in KC.

The New England Patriots should just stay away from the formerly terrific or just very good who now are just part of the over-the-hill, underperforming gang. Their ships have sailed.
