NFL free agency time is one of the best times of the year! And if you’re a New England Patriots fan, you’re pretty excited to see what they can do with this $32 million of cap space.

We’ve seen the big names via trades and free agency. Deandre Hopkins is a common name linked to the Patriots. Allen Robinson could be intriguing. Orlando Brown Jr. will get a big contract somewhere. But one name that nobody is talking about is Braxton Berrios…wait what?!

Yes, THAT Braxton Berrios!

Berrios spent some time with the Patriots before getting onto the New York Jets for four seasons. Well, it looks like Berrios’ time with the Jets is coming to an end.

So if that’s the case, could the Patriots be a player in the Berrios sweepstakes? You’d be surprised, but there could be some positives that come with a Braxton Berrios to the Patriots signing.

New England Patriots can use Braxton Berrios to help Marcus Jones

This next sentence is going to sound weird, but it actually does make sense. Berrios could actually help Marcus Jones in 2023.

We all know how electric Jones is when he steps on the field. He beat the Jets single-handedly in Foxborough during the 2022 season with his punt return for a touchdown! But Jones also can play on all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.

But if Berrios was in the fold, it could help keep Marcus Jones on one side of the ball.

We’ve seen the speed from Jones on offense during his MNF touchdown against the Bills. We’ve seen him lock down guys in coverage. The special teams speaks for itself.

I’d love to see Berrios take the receiver slot on offense and maybe even return some kickoffs. Leave Jones in on the punt return and sub in defensively when needed.

We know Bill Belichick loves guys that can do multiple things on a football field. But if it means putting his team in a better position to win games? Then I think he’d be willing to use Berrios for certain things to let Jones focus on special teams and defense exclusively.

New England Patriots getting Braxton Berrios for cheap

Let’s not beat around the bush with this one. Berrios would be on the cheaper side for the Patriots.

Berrios would be anywhere in the $3-$5 million range for a multiyear contract. That’s less than what the Patriots paid for a guy like Kendrick Bourne.

We know the Patriots like to find the guys that they can bring on for a fair to cheaper deal. The former Miami Hurricane is somebody that the Patriots wouldn’t have to break the bank on this off-season. Saving some money can help with other crucial needs too!

The bottom line with the New England Patriots and Braxton Berrios

Berrios is not the top priority signing that the Patriots should be pining for when free agency starts next week. But, it could have its positive signs too!

Next. Cody Mauch a sleeper pick on the O-line. dark

If you bring the 5-foot-9 receiver back to Foxborough, (he was a 2018 6th round draft pick by the Patriots) then it has to be a secondary move. A Hopkins, or Robinson, or Brandin Cooks needs to be done too in order for this Berrios move to be sufficient enough.

Free agency should be a lot of fun next week!
