Sometimes, coaches come and go in the professional sports world. They shine bright like a shooting star and then burn out quickly. That seems to have been the case with (now former) New England Patriots coach Matt Patricia.

We had heard rumors that Patricia was looking around for other potential opportunities in the NFL. The Broncos were one option at one point, and the Eagles had been flown around as well.

Well Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that Patricia will be accepting a senior defensive assistant position with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 48 year old Patricia ends his two year (second) stint with the Patriots.

New England Patriots putting Matt Patricia in a bad position

Let’s address the elephant in the room here. Matt Patricia being on the offensive side of the ball was a bad idea for everyone involved.

Patricia had always been on the defensive side of the ball. I get the angle of Bill Belichick wanting his coaches to know multiple phases of the game. But come on now, we all saw that wasn’t going to work!

It set the Patriots back tremendously. We saw a vanilla offense that didn’t scare teams and gave opposing defensive coordinators an easy time when playing New England. We were seeing a continuously frustrated Mac Jones, who couldn’t get into a rhythm in that failure of an offense.

If Belichick had let Patricia do what he knows how to do on defense, it could’ve made for a much better role for the now former Patriots coach. Instead, we got the results that a lot of people correctly expected. An 8-9 team that was on the fringe of a playoff berth. That’s not acceptable!

New England Patriots and Matt Patricia both needing a fresh start

This move is the best thing that could’ve happened to both sides for the 2023 season and beyond.

The Patriots have clearly moved on with Bill O’Brien running the show on offense. A lot of players are already excited for a season with O’Brien at OC and returning to a functional offense.

Matt Patricia needs to show that he doesn’t need the Patriots in order to be successful. We all know how much of a dumpster fire the Lions head coaching job was for the man. Maybe he needs to just stick with defense in order to be effective in the NFL. The Eagles are clearly fine with taking a chance on him!

Again, this seemed like what was best for both sides moving forward.

Next. Will Jerod Mayo succeed Bill Belichick as HC?. dark

“Matty P” was a genius for the Patriots in his first stint as their defensive coordinator. But in his second stint, he was wearing too many hats from the start!

I do feel bad for Patricia because I think he still has some good coaching left in him. Maybe the Eagles will bring it out of him by focusing on only one task: defense.

So thanks again for everything, Matt Patricia. You were a great defensive coordinator, but it’s time to see what you can do in a different setting.
