Boston Celtics fans are excited as the defending NBA Champions will finally open the 2024-25 season against the New York Knicks on Tuesday. It feels like it was only yesterday that the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals and now the fanbase is wondering if Joe Mazzulla's team has what it takes to repeat as champions.

With a core that boasts the likes of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Jrue Holiday, the Celtics are set up to be competitive this season and beyond. Having said that, not everybody's future in Boston is secure whether that's because of a contract situation or other factors.

Here are three Celtics who are potentially entering their final season in Boston.

1. Al Horford, C/PF

The 2024-25 campaign marks Al Horford's fourth season in a row with the Celtics and seventh overall with the franchise. Even though the former Florida product no longer plays at an All-Star level, he's still been an important part of Boston's rotation throughout the last few seasons.

Horford played 65 games (33 starts) with the Celtics last season, averaging 8.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and .511/.419/.867 shooting splits. He also started in 15 of his 19 postseason appearances putting up 9.2 points and 7.0 rebounds while leading the league with a 72.1% two-point percentage.

Horford still finds ways to contribute, but it can't be forgotten that he just turned 38 years old in June. Even though he recently said that he hasn't contemplated retirement, things can quickly change at that age — especially if it looks like he's lost a step as the season progresses.

Another reason why Horford might not be back this season is his contract. He's slated to hit free agency at the end of the season and it isn't guaranteed that the Celtics will re-sign him.

Horford is nothing short of a fan favorite in Boston, which is why Celtics fans must cherish every minute he plays this season.
