2. Will Smith, RP
Will Smith is a veteran relief pitcher who last played for the Kansas City Royals. With the Red Sox potentially pursuing a closer committee, Smith has experience as both a closer and relief pitcher throughout his career.
Last season was a down year for Smith as he had a 6.53 ERA, four losses, and allowed a .273 batting average. The 2024 season ended with Smith being left off the Royals’ ALDS roster due to a back injury, which could be a concern as he turns 36 in July.
Smith can provide solid outings for the Red Sox’s bullpen as both a closer and reliever. The Red Sox could use another lefty in the bullpen, especially one with Smith’s experience with an All-Star nod and three World Series rings. Both starting and relief pitching has been inconsistent for the Red Sox over the last two seasons, so bringing in Smith could provide some stability.
3. Adam Duvall, OF
With the loss of Tyler O’Neill, the Red Sox currently don’t have a power-hitting outfielder. Why not bring back Adam Duvall? In his lone season with the Red Sox in 2023, he hit 21 home runs, 58 RBIs, batting .247 in 92 games.
Last season Duvall had a down year for the Atlanta Braves, hitting 11 home runs, 30 RBIs, batting .182 in 104 games. Duvall, 36, is known to either swing for the fences or strike out while the Red Sox don’t have that kind of hitter currently on the team.
Duvall doesn’t need to be an everyday player at this stage of his career as he can add depth in the outfield for Boston. Playing at Fenway Park with the Green Monster would be extremely beneficial to both him and the Red Sox as it was in 2023. His big-time swing could provide a spark to the offense whenever they need a big hot or are down a player.
