After missing out on the festivities last season, the Boston Celtics are set to play Christmas Day basketball once again, and it should be a fantastic matchup.
According to the NBA on social media, the Celtics are set to host the Miami Heat on Christmas at 2:30 PM ET. Not only should this be a good matchup because of their long-time rivalry, but also because both teams made some big changes this offseason. Most notably, Miami landed Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, stealing him from the Celtics' grasp as they were in serious discussions for him, too.
A lot of Celtics fans were hurt about the team missing out on Antetokounmpo, especially since it ultimately led to them trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George (even though Brown had most likely already played his final game for the Celtics anyway). But the truth is, they're going to be just fine without him, and Christmas Day should prove that.
The Celtics will still be a good team without Giannis Antetokounmpo
Adding "the Greek Freak" would have completely changed Boston's dynamic. Antetokounmpo is someone who can impact the game in every area and would have been the best possible player to pair alongside a prime Jayson Tatum.
But at the same time, the Celtics don't need Antetokounmpo to be a contender. Say what you will about how he got to Boston, his age, injury concerns, etc., but there are a lot of reasons to be genuinely excited about what George can bring to the table, especially as a complement to Tatum. And on top of that, the Celtics have a very talented, deep, and potential-filled roster. They may not be the same team they were that dominated the league in 2024, but there's a lot to like about their outlook.
Players like Tatum, Payton Pritchard, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo Gonzalez should be in line for big leaps next season. And the acquisitions the Celtics made this offseason (George, Mitchell Robinson, Mike Conley as a locker room presence, and Chris Cenac Jr., who looked great in summer league) should only help them compete immediately.
Giannis Antetokounmpo's fit in Miami remains questionable
I'm sure the Heat will still be a good team next season (I have learned my lesson writing off an Erik Spoelstra-coached team in the past), but I'm not all that sold on Antetokounmpo's fit with the team, at least offensively.
Miami has zero spacing or depth, and the two-time MVP's fit next to Bam Adebayo (who still isn't a stretch big, no matter how hard he tries) is brutal.
Obviously, I'm not going to say the Heat shouldn't have made that trade. They needed to make a big splash if they were serious about competing for a championship, and to also steal Antetokounmpo away from Boston is a huge plus for them. But it wouldn't be all that surprising if the team finishes a lot lower in the standings than many are expecting them to.
