The Boston Red Sox are in good shape entering Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, sitting with a 20-20 record and three games behind the New York Yankees in first place for the American League East division. There’s a good chance that reinforcements are on the way with top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer on the verge of a call-up to the major leagues.

While the Red Sox can be excited about young players, not all of them turn out to be Kristian Campbell. In the case of one former Red Sox prospect, he’s spent the last few months bouncing around the major leagues and he’s getting another opportunity with a contending team in the National League.

Former Red Sox Prospect Bobby Dalbec Signs Minor League Deal With Brewers

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Curt Hogg, former Red Sox prospect Bobby Dalbec is signing a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Dalbec will be assigned to Triple-A Nashville as part of the deal and begin another chapter in the 29-year-old’s career.

Dalbec was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft and put himself on the radar by hitting .257/.361/.558 with 32 homers and 109 RBI between Advanced-A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2018. He cracked Baseball America’s top 100 prospects list in 2020 and made his debut during the COVID-shortened season, smashing eight home runs in 23 games.

Dalbec put up respectable numbers in 2021, hitting .240/.298/.494 with 25 homers and 78 RBI in 133 games but it came with a cost as Dalbec struck out 156 times in 453 plate appearances. The lack of contact saw Dalbec’s numbers dip to .215/.283/.369 with 12 homers and 39 RBI over 117 games in 2022 and he hit .159/.234/.235 with a pair of homers and nine RBI in 58 major league games over the past two seasons.

After electing minor league free agency last offseason, Dalbec landed with the Chicago White Sox in January. He hit .326/.354/.696 with four homers and 13 RBI before slugging his way back to the majors but went just 4-for-18 with six strikeouts before he was designated for assignment on May 4.

A former first baseman, it would be tempting to have Dalbec in Boston these days. But contact issues proved to be a big problem at the major league level and have him looking for a new opportunity in Milwaukee.
