The Boston Red Sox are starting to gain momentum ahead of the 2025 MLB All-Star break. Taking advantage of a recently favorable schedule, the Red Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 games after sweeping back-to-back series against the Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox, injecting life back into Alex Cora's club that it desperately needed.

Although things are going well in Boston at the moment, the same can't be said for the franchise's former players. Several ex-Red Sox veterans are struggling to find permanent roles this season, including one pitcher who just returned to the team he quit not that long ago.

Former Red Sox RHP Jordan Weems Rejoins Astros 2 Days After Electing Free Agency

Former Red Sox right-handed pitcher Jordan Weems is back with the club he just quit. On Wednesday, MLB Trade Rumors' Anthony Franco reported that the Houston Astros have signed Weems to a minor-league contract, which will send him to Triple-A Sugar Land.

It's been a rocky ride for the 32-year-old hurler ever since he signed a first minor-league deal with the Astros on June 2 following his Atlanta Braves relief. Weems went 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings with the Space Cowboys before being promoted the Houston's big-league bullpen towards the end of the month.

Unfortunately, that's when things took a turn for the worse. After surrendering two earned runs on five hits across three innings in two appearances, the Astros designated Weems for assignment on Monday before he elected free agency two days later. There must've been a lack of potential suitors, or else he wouldn't have returned to the Astros organization.

Red Sox fans will remember Weems from when he was drafted as a catcher in the third round of the 2011 MLB draft. He eventually switched over to pitching duties ahead of the 2016 campaign; however, he never reached higher than Triple-A Worcester in Boston's system. He elected free agency in November 2019 and has since made stops in Oakland, Arizona, Washington, Atlanta, and Houston.

Whether or not Weems' latest Astros stint will work out remains to be seen. In the meantime, Red Sox fans will continue to watch his situation from afar, interested to see if he can make his way back to the Majors before Houston visits Fenway Park to begin August.
