The New England Patriots are heading into Week 7 on a high note after their third straight win to improve to 4-2 on the season. Not every team has the same forward momentum as the Patriots as we slowly approach the Nov. 4 trade deadline. Underwhelming teams will make roster moves to turn their season around. One of those teams was the Philadelphia Eagles, who shook up their practice squad on Tuesday. Among the players they let go was former Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker.

Javon Baker Cut by Eagles Ahead of Week 7

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Eagles were releasing Baker and RB Audric Estime to make room in their practice squad. What they will do with those spots is unclear, but this is a disappointing development for Baker.

The former UCF standout came into the league with high expectations after being selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He immediately made headlines upon his selection by describing his game as, "Just come to the home stadium and bring y'all popcorn. That's all I'll say. I make people in wheelchairs stand up." Unfortunately, Baker hasn't lived up to that in the NFL, with one catch for 12 yards in 11 games.

Baker was released before the 2025 campaign after a dud of a rookie season. He cleared waivers and landed on the Eagles' practice squad. Despite the underwhelming Eagles offense to start the season and the ongoing crisis there, Baker never sniffed the active roster. Before he was able to make his Eagles debut, he was released.

The Patriots obviously haven't regretted moving on from Baker. While New England could still use a competent WR3 behind Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, the chances of Baker turning into an impactful playmaker anytime soon seem like a long shot.

Baker is still 23 years old and has enough physical and athletic tools to warrant more of a look by another team. He is a physical player who can play through contact thanks to his strength and athleticism. So far, that hasn't resulted in much in the NFL, but may be enough to get another practice squad contract. Where Baker's NFL career goes from here will be interesting to watch, but he will surely be remembered as a draft bust in Patriots circles.
