Jerod Mayo Bungling Quarterback Situation While Drake Maye in Concussion Protocol
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots are still buzzing from their thrilling Week 8 win over the New York Jets to end their six-game losing streak. More significant than the win, however, was Drake Maye leaving the game early and entering the concussion protocol after taking a hit to the helmet.
As of now, we don't have a real update on Maye's status for Sunday's clash against the Tennessee Titans. Most recently, head coach Jerod Mayo said that Maye would throw in Wednesday's practice but would not stay on the field for longer than 30 minutes as part of Phase 3 of the NFL's official concussion protocol.
There is certainly a chance Maye could get cleared before Week 9. If he doesn't, however, the Patriots need to make a bold move.
Jerod Mayo will likely turn to Jacoby Brissett once again in that case, especially after the veteran led the team to the win against the Jets. Yet, Patriots fans would love to see their talented rookie Joe Milton in action, especially now that it's clear that New England isn't going anywhere this season.
Brissett has been an admirable leader and locker-room presence for this young team. However, he has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league this season, completing 59.1% of his passes for 828 yards in six games. He has two passing touchdowns and one interception for the year. On PFF, he ranks as the 33rd-best QB this season.
Joe Milton, on the other hand, has a ton of upside as he showcased in the preseason. He has great physical tools, standing at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. His size and athleticism, combined with his rare arm talent make him a fascinating prospect. He will almost certainly make more mistakes than Brissett but Patriots fans would rather lose with Milton under center than a 31-year-old veteran.
