Jerod Mayo Reveals Lack of Job Security Heading into 2025
The New England Patriots currently sit 3-11 and are poised to lose their final three games. A 3-14 finish would mark the second straight season the Patriots have one of the worst records in the NFL. This fall from grace was expected from the Patriots organization since the team is in rebuild mode after drafting Drake Maye last season.
Despite that, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo is already getting questions about his job security. During his Wednesday press conference, Mayo was asked if ownership has guaranteed him a second season. Mayo responded, "I’m not trying to squash anything. I’m trying to let you know where my focus is", according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.
Patriots News: Jerod Mayo's Seat May Already Be Hot
Mayo's response should definitely raise eyebrows. It seems ownership hasn't provided assurances to Mayo about his job security, which is crazy.
While Mayo's first season won't end with a winning record, that shouldn't have been expected. The Patriots' roster construction still has a lot of work to be done if they want to return to their winning ways.
Moving on from Mayo after one season and not letting him build the team in his way would be a huge mistake. Robert Kraft should presumably understand that stability matters after spending 24 seasons with Bill Belichick at the helm.
Although Mayo's comments paint a foggy picture of who the Patriots head coach will be next season right now, it will be clear soon enough. Nonetheless, it would be a huge surprise if Mayo was fired after one season in New England.
