Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is now reporting the Patriots will hire McDaniels. Our original story follows below.

The New England Patriots have a pivotal offseason upcoming. After going 4-13 and missing the playoffs for the third straight season, the Pats made some big changes to the coaching staff. Right after Week 18, the Pats parted ways with Jerod Mayo after one season at the helm.

They were able to land one of the best coaching candidates on the market in Mike Vrabel and have their hands full as they seek to rebuild this organization.

The biggest question mark around Vrabel thus far is who he'll bring in to become his offensive coordinator and help lead this offense with Drake Maye.

There have been a lot of names floated as potential fits but the latest rumors suggest that Josh McDaniels is close to landing the offensive coordinator role with the Pats...again.

Patriots News: Josh McDaniels and New England Closing in on Deal

Kirk Minihane of Barstool was the first one to report that McDaniels will be named as the new offensive coordinator. Ben Belford-Peltzman of the Patriots Beat also added he's heard from a source McDaniels has interviewed for the job, while independent NFL reporter Joseph Pasteris said McDaniels was in the building on Tuesday.

Although nothing is confirmed by anyone from the national media, there have been a ton of rumors that McDaniels was always an option for the Pats.

The 48-year-old has a long history with the Patriots. Over two different stints with New England, he's held roles as a Personnel assistant, defensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, and qffensive coordinator.

During those tenures, he's secured six Super Bowl titles and had the most success with the Pats. He had two head coaching stints with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders but didn't last more than two seasons at either location.

McDaniels attitude rubbed many people the wrong way at both locations, which led to him being fired twice. He tried too much to impersonate Bill Belichick and that didn't work. He isn't much of a people person but it appears he'll get another chance to land with New England.

There are other potential candidates like Josh McCown, Nick Caley, and Todd Downing to name a few, but it looks like they are zeroing in on McDaniels.
