Mike Vrabel Retains Questionable Coach From Jerod Mayo's Staff
New England Patriots fans are excited about the future now that Mike Vrabel has settled into his new head coaching role.
The former linebacker-turned-coach's staff has begun coming together, as he's already brought in Josh McDaniels and Terrell Williams as his offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively. On the flip side, several members of last season's staff have already left the organization, including safeties coach Brian Belichick.
But while many of ex-HC Jerod Mayo's coaches followed him out of town, Patriots fans will be shocked to learn that Vrabel has decided to retain one of the former's staff members.
Patriots News: Mike Vrabel Retains Ben McAdoo
On Friday, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that the Patriots are "expected" to bring back senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo for the 2025 season. Reiss added that special teams coaches Tom Quinn and Jeremy Springer will also be returning to the team.
After last season's abysmal performance, you can't blame fans for being shocked by McAdoo's return.
The Patriots had one of the worst attacks in the NFL after McAdoo joined Mayo's staff ahead of the 2024 campaign. New England failed to score at least 20 points in 10-of-17 (58.8%) of games last season, finishing near the bottom of the league in most offensive statistics including points (17.0, 30th) and total yards (291.9, 31st) per game.
MassLive's Mark Daniels reported in November that McAdoo played a big role in quarterback Drake Maye's development, as well as the team's third-down play-calling. Considering how the Patriots owned the fourth-worst third-down conversion percentage, it's safe to say the promising QB is the main reason behind McAdoo's retention.
If McAdoo continues having a positive impact on Maye's development, Patriots fans won't have any issue with his sticking around. However, if the 22-year-old signal-caller stagnates or the offense doesn't bounce back, the former Super Bowl-winning coach might not stick around for long.
We'll have more idea of what McAdoo's role will look like as the Patriots' offseason continues.
