Patriots fans woke up to disturbing news on Monday morning that team captain and safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested over the weekend and was facing serious charges.

The reported incident had occurred Saturday morning when the Braintree, Massachusetts police responded to a call regarding an altercation between two people. According to court documents, Peppers is accused of hitting and choking a woman and is charged with assault and battery on an intimate partner, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and strangulation, as well as possession of a Class B drug.

On Monday, Peppers was arraigned in Quincy District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

As the legal process is playing out, we now have more information about Peppers' NFL future. According to Ian Rapoport, the 29-year-old was placed on the Commissioner Exempt List. This prevents him from practicing or playing in any games with the team.

NFL News: Patriots S Jabrill Peppers Placed on Commissioner Exempt List

The NFL commissioner's exempt list is basically a paid leave. Players can attend meetings and receive treatments at the team facility but are not allowed to play football. Only Roger Goodell can place or remove a player from the list.

Currently, the Browns' rookie defensive lineman Mike Hall Jr. is the other player on the commissioner's exempt list after he was charged with domestic violence.

Peppers has a hearing scheduled for his case on November 22. His presence was waived for the hearing but he will likely be out on the exempt list until at least that date or until more details are revealed.
