The New England Patriots lost four straight and are currently at the bottom of the AFC East with a 3-11 record. They play the Bills twice and the Chargers in their remaining three games, making a potential 3-14 finish to the season very likely.

This is not an unexpected outcome. When the Patriots gave the reins to a first-time head coach and a rookie quarterback, growing pains were inevitable. That doesn't negate the fact that this Patriots season was highly disappointing.

The offense was always going to be a work in progress. It was the defensive regression that had Patriots fans questioning Jerod Mayo and the coaching staff. New England went from having an above-average defense (15th in points and 7th in yards allowed) and one of the best run defenses in the league in 2023 to a bottom ten unit.

Amidst speculation about the Patriots potentially replacing Mayo in the offseason, the most recent reporting suggests otherwise. On Thursday, Adam Schefter confirmed Dianna Russini and Tom Curran's reporting that the Patriots ownership is planning to keep Mayo for next season.

Robert Kraft and the Patriots management know the importance of stability all too well after working with Bill Belichick for 24 years. The Patriots were 5-11 in Belichick's first season as a head coach.

This obviously doesn't mean that the Patriots will win the Super Bowl next year like they did in Belichick's second season.

At the same time, moving on from a decision-maker and micro-manager like Belichick was always going to be difficult. Mayo may not be the right head coach for this team in the long-term but the Patriots owe it to themselves to see the process through. If there isn't improvement next season, then they can start thinking about alternatives.
