The New England Patriots desperately needed a boost, especially on the offensive end, to help turn their season around. That came via a quarterback change as the team officially announced Drake Maye as the starter going forward.

Even though a change was absolutely necessary, this move carries some risks. The Patriots' offensive line has been poor all season and Jacoby Brissett has been getting hit consistently. New England doesn't have the best wide receiver group in the league. And they are facing a solid Texans defense in Week 6.

All of this creates a big challenge for the 22-year-old. Fortunately for him, he seems to have the full support of the team, including the veteran leadership. Patriots insider Doug Kyed reported that team captain Deatrich Wise Jr. said that they are behind Maye and believe in him as the starting quarterback.

Patriots News: Drake Maye Has Full Support of Veterans

Wise is one of the longest-tenured Patriots on the team, currently in his eighth season. He is one of the few players on the team with significant postseason experience and a Super Bowl win. He is as reliable and competent as any player on this team. Plus, he is the team captain.

That's why his words carry weight within the organization.

"In practice I’ve seen him be resilient and run the offense pretty smoothly. I’m confident to see what he has this Sunday."

Maye getting the endorsement of the team captains should help boost his confidence. It will certainly not be smooth sailing for the young man as he will make mistakes early in his career. If he is able to maintain the confidence and resilience he has reportedly shown in practice, he should be just fine in the long run.
