The first month of Romeo Doubs' New England Patriots tenure has been completely mixed so far. He was terrible during his debut, then recorded a career-high 96 yards in Week 2, then caught two touchdowns in Week 4, and then was basically shut out completely in Week 5 (one reception on three targets for 16 yards; New England dropped 45 points on the Las Vegas Raiders).
Doubs has also had some tough drops on passes he should've caught (not even factoring in his egregious, essentially game-losing drop in Week 1) and played a huge role in Drake Maye's lone interception against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4. Even though he's had to take on a bigger role after A.J. Brown sustained an ankle sprain in the first game, that doesn't excuse how inconsistent and somewhat unreliable Doubs has been.
The Patriots signed the California native to a four-year, $68 million contract this past offseason, and he hasn't lived up to that contract yet (especially when you factor in that he is essentially Stefon Diggs' replacement).
But I still think signing Doubs was the right move for New England, and in due time, he'll be able to show exactly what he brings to the table.
Romeo Doubs should be better for the Patriots
It hasn't been completely pretty so far, but Doubs has still had some good moments in New England. He has made some big plays (like his 63-yard reception against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2), and he has been good in the red zone (which was one of his biggest appeals to the Patriots),
The 26-year-old also has a ton of versatility. He can run short, intermediate, and long routes while also being able to line up at every receiver position on the field. New England hasn't fully been able to lean into this yet with Brown on the shelf and Doubs needing to slightly make up for his absence. But Brown could be back on the field sooner rather than later, and that should give Doubs the chance to play the role he was supposed to play as a No. 2 receiver.
On paper, Doubs is a great fit on this Patriots team. He possesses the versatility that Josh McDaniels likes to utilize in his offense, and he is a great complement to Brown, who is a legitimate deep threat and can take the top off the defense. His season has been a bit of a mixed bag so far, but he is still very talented and is continuing to build rapport with Maye and the rest of the offense.
The best is yet to come for Doubs in New England. And fans should be excited about what he can do when he is finally able to play the role and be the guy he was supposed to be when the Patriots signed him.
