The New England Patriots waived wide receiver Stefon Diggs earlier this year in a shocking-not-so-shocking move (shocking because he had a bounce-back year as their best receiver and the love for him with the team seemed mutual, not shocking because of his contract). However, with the Patriots still looking to bolster their offense next season (and, elephant in the room, him being found not guilty on his legal charges), a reunion could make sense for both sides.
The Patriots should look into re-signing Stefon Diggs
Here are the facts: 1) Diggs was New England's best wide receiver not only last season but in a long time (85 receptions, 1,013 yards, four touchdowns, played in 55% of his snaps in all 17 games) and he built great rapport with young quarterback Drake Maye, 2) the Patriots released him for financial reasons (and maybe legal reasons), not because they didn't want him on the team anymore, and 3) Eliot Wolf is open to bringing the Maryland alum back.
Plus, Diggs made a positive impact on his teammates during his one (first?) season in New England, so much so that some of them are already vouching for his return. He took on the role of a mentor and veteran presence, and it clearly paid off as the Patriots had their best season in years (I know Diggs wasn't the only or even biggest reason for that, but on a team that young, it certainly helped).
The Patriots are in a spot right now where they can afford to have too much talent in their receiving corps. That's what they should strive for. Even if they get A.J. Brown on the roster (which seems likely at this point), there is still a role for Diggs in New England.
Stefon Diggs could (hypothetically) co-exist with A.J. Brown
Two things can be true: Diggs was fantastic last season and blew everybody's expectations out of the water, but he's also not a true No. 1 on a contending team anymore (he practically pulled a Houdini act in the playoffs).
Diggs is reliable, and he stepped up in a major way for the Patriots, but he's also 32 years old and can struggle against the top cornerbacks in the league. Acquiring Brown would not only give New England and Maye a legitimate No. 1 option, but it would also open up opportunities for its other receivers to break out, and that could include Diggs, with Brown being more of a vertical threat.
In all, the four-time Pro Bowler was great in New England last season. It seemed like he enjoyed his time with the team, and it seemed like they enjoyed having him around. So, at this rate, don't be surprised if he ends up finding his way back sooner than later.
