The New England Patriots need to extend Christian Gonzalez as soon as possible. And, to be honest, they probably should have already made a deal happen.
Gonzalez has two years remaining on his contract, but he is currently eligible for a new deal, and there are no reasons for New England not to just hand him a blank check and give him whatever he's asking for.
The Oregon alum has already established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league (he's even the highest-rated cornerback in Madden 27), and he was crucial to the Patriots' success last year, and he should continue to be a crucial part of their success moving forward.
Maybe it's easier for me to say because it's not my money, but New England needs to figure it out and sign Gonzalez to a new deal before the start of the season.

It's not a stretch to say that Gonzalez may have singlehandedly prevented the Patriots from getting blown out during Super Bowl LX because of his clutch stops. He's only 24 years old, but he may be the most important player on New England's roster and has already proven he can step up when the pressure's on, and it's wild that the team hasn't locked him up for the long haul yet.
A lot of talk has been about the Patriots' offense, and it's easy to see why (Drake Maye's MVP-caliber season, the arrivals of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, their intriguing backfield, their improved offensive line, etc.), but under Mike Vrabel, they're a defensive team first and foremost. And Gonzalez is a big part of that.
The Texas native is one of the best defensive players in the entire NFL, let alone on the Patriots' roster, and they need to do whatever they can to ensure he sticks around for the long haul.
Last season's Super Bowl appearance was just the start of something special. The Patriots have a bright future with a talented roster and great coaching staff. And the fact that they should only be getting better from here on out is something that should excite the entire fanbase.
The truth is, though, that they are going to take a huge step backwards if they don't figure things out with Gonzalez. The last thing they need is to move on from him just because they can't figure out terms for a new contract. And as it stands, the Patriots need to figure things out as soon as possible.
