The New England Patriots have officially kicked off their training camp.
There are many storylines floating around at the moment. However, we are going to dive into the new-look offense. Whether it is the acquisition of a true number one weapon like A.J. Brown or the addition of a more underrated player like Romeo Doubs, the Patriots are in a great position to take a massive leap. So let’s dive into all things offense.
Drake Maye's second year in the Josh McDaniels system
Drake Maye has proven himself to be one of the top young stars in the NFL.
After a season that resulted in a Super Bowl appearance and second place in the MVP race, it is clear that Maye is the future of the league. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is an offensive genius, but his system is very hard to learn and master. Maye did a great job last year, but I have incredibly high expectations as he enters his second year in the system.
Since the UNC alum has had an entire off-season to truly perfect his understanding of the scheme, we could see him reach an entirely new level and become one of the most elite quarterbacks in the NFL.
The Patriots' offense is loaded with playmakers
The Patriots added one of the best receivers in the NFL in Brown, while also adding the underrated talents of Doubs.
Doubs is a big, strong, reliable chain mover that Maye will be able to count on. And Brown will be the big play threat that opposing defenses need to account for. This will create favorable matchups for Doubs and the rest of the Patriots’ offense.
Fans can also be excited about a potential year two leap from running back TreVeyon Henderson. All he needs is one small gap to hit, and he can take it the distance on any given play. I also can’t forget to mention the biggest playmaker at the most important position, Maye, the face of New England.
The Patriots' offensive line should be much improved
The offensive line was one of the main factors in the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss. It was clear that Mike Vrabel understood this, as he went out and signed one of the best guards in free agency, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and used the first-round draft pick on tackle Caleb Lomu. Obviously, Lomu is a pick for the future, but if somebody gets hurt this year, he is great insurance.
Vera-Tucker stepping in at left guard is huge for Will Campbell. Campbell needs a veteran presence by his side, and the athleticism of Vera-Tucker will be ideal for assisting the second-year tackle whenever he needs it.
One of my favorite moves is putting Jared Wilson at his natural position of center. Wilson was an elite center in college, but played left guard as a rookie out of necessity. Now, with the additions along the offensive line, he could turn into a future All-Pro at center.
Overall, with the new additions along the offensive line and Will Campbell being fully healthy, this New England offense could take a massive leap forward with reliable protection.
Things to keep an eye on during training camp
There are a few things fans can be on the lookout for.
Does A.J. Brown still look like that true alpha receiver? He will be battling it out with Christian Gonzalez on the daily, and as the saying goes, “iron sharpens iron”. How does the chemistry of the offense look? There are multiple new pieces, so how do they connect and play together?
And fans who haven’t seen Maye play in person, if you are attending training camp, prepare to watch an absolute cannon of an arm.
