The New England Patriots have had one of the best offseasons in the NFL. After a trip to the Super Bowl, many teams would be content with the roster they had, but not Mike Vrabel. That is something I love about Vrabel, since the Patriots got dominated in the Super Bowl, he decided to go all out with improving this roster.
Whether it was bolstering the offensive line to protect his franchise quarterback or acquiring one of the best receivers in the NFL in A.J. Brown, Vrabel is going all in. So let's dive into some of these moves and the one priority left to make 2026 the perfect off-season, which is paying Christian Gonzalez whatever he wants.
Drake Maye was just gifted a true alpha at receiver
After months of speculation, Brown is finally a Patriot.
This move is years overdue, especially since Brown has been a Patriots fan his entire life, and cried when he wasn't drafted by New England in 2019. The wait is finally over, not just for Brown, but also Patriots fans everywhere. These fans have been desperate for a true number one receiver for years, and they got a taste of it last year in Stefon Diggs. However, the Mississippi native is a completely different animal at this point in his career compared to Diggs.
The Patriots' receivers struggled during their playoff run last year and lacked a true alpha who dictates coverage. That will no longer be an issue with the menacing presence of Brown. He will be a weapon that makes opposing defensive coordinators lose sleep at night, and handing him to one of the best young quarterbacks in football will be massive.
Maye could go absolutely nuclear with Brown this season, and Brown could have one of his best years as well. Maye is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he will be able to put the ball wherever Brown wants it, something the former Philadelphia Eagles receiver hasn't experienced with his previous quarterbacks.
This will be one of the best duos in the league this year, and should be one of the main reasons the Patriots are Super Bowl contenders.
And let's not forget about the free agent addition of Romeo Doubs either. Doubs is the reliable chain mover that will have incredibly favorable matchups due to every defense focusing on Brown. This will likely result in the best year of Doubs' career as well. Overall, this single move for Brown will have an impact on so many different players on New England's roster, and it has fans all over the region jumping for joy.
The Patriots have bolstered the offensive line to protect the franchise
If the Patriots' 2026 offseason has told us anything, it is that the priority is Maye. Whether it is giving him more weapons or rejuvenating the offensive line, it all comes back to the young quarterback.
They added left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker in free agency, drafted Caleb Lomu in the first round, and drafted Dametrious Crownover in the sixth round. Crownover is more of a project but has great size and tools to develop into a future swing tackle. Vera-Tucker can be a Pro Bowl-caliber guard if he stays healthy. He will also have a great impact being next to left tackle Will Campbell, and could help Campbell's development, especially since Campbell was playing alongside a fellow rookie last year.
This will allow Jared Wilson to move back to his natural position at center. This reshuffling of the line puts every player where they are supposed to be and will create more continuity among the trenches. The first round selection of Lomu is also a great insurance policy at right tackle if Morgan Moses gets hurt. Lomu is the right tackle of the future, and with a 35-year-old Moses on the roster, it will likely be his last year in New England until Lomu can take over.
The Patriots have to give Christian Gonzalez a blank check
Christian Gonzalez is a top-two corner in the NFL, and he is a cornerstone of the Patriots franchise. There aren't many lockdown corners in the league who can erase an entire side of the field, and that is why you need to pay them early.
Gonzalez is under contract in 2026, but he is eligible for an extension, and he has been away from the team during OTAs. This shows he is likely waiting to get paid before he returns to Foxborough. The Oregon alum has proven himself as one of the best players in the NFL, and he deserves a massive paycheck to reflect that. The Patriots shouldn't risk letting him get anywhere near free agency next year and should pay him now since his value will only go up.
By securing Gonzo's services for the foreseeable future, it will turn this off-season into the perfect one, because not only will New England have added serious pieces from outside sources, it will have also extended one of their best players to torment the rest of the division for years to come.
