The New England Patriots' training camp is rolling on as head coach Mike Vrabel continues to assess his inaugural roster. The Patriots in camp have a lot of work to do to prove their potential after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance. Training camp will give Vrabel's staff a better idea of whether ending the postseason drought is an achievable goal in 2025.
July isn't even over yet, though, meaning the Patriots still have a ways to go before the 53-man roster is finalized. It's only a matter of time before this year's training camp cuts begin, and one returning running back is in danger of not being in the mix once September arrives.
Patriots RB Terrell Jennings' Days in New England Are Numbered
The Patriots' 2025 running back room is shaping up to be a mixture of returning players and fresh faces. Veteran RB duo Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson are back for another year, while rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Lan Larison are looking to make an impact in their first NFL season.
With so much competition in the backfield, it wouldn't be surprising if Terrell Jennings is left on the outside looking in when all is said and done.
After a productive five-year stay at Florida A&M, Jennings joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He impressed the coaching staff enough to make the practice squad and was even elevated to the active roster three times during the regular season, resulting in 33 rushing yards on just three carries.
Although he made the most of his limited opportunities, it's hard to imagine Jennings making the roster over one of the Patriots' other RBs. Stevenson and Gibson are locks as the top two runners, whereas Henderson will likely be the RB3 or else New England wouldn't have used a second-round pick on him.
Although Larison making the roster isn't guaranteed either, Vrabel & Co. clearly liked what they saw in him. Otherwise, the Patriots wouldn't have signed him post-draft. On the flip side, Vrabel may also be more willing to cut Jennings due to the latter's signing being part of the previous regime's decision-making.
In other words, Jennings can't afford to take his foot off the gas pedal this summer. Otherwise, he might not be with the Patriots for much longer.
