Patriots SB Champion Reportedly 'Wants' to Replace Mayo as Coach
The 2024 NFL regular season is nearing a close. The New England Patriots are 3-13 and are currently in possession of the No. 1 overall pick. There has been a lot of chatter regarding head coach Jerod Mayo's job security.
Ownership has come out and said that Mayo will be returning to the sideline in 2025 on Dec. 19. Since that announcement, New England has gone 0-2, getting outscored 64-28. In the Week 17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, fans in the crowd were chanting "Fire Mayo", expressing their displeasure with the team.
Although Mayo got ownership's blessing, former Patriot Mike Vrabel is eyeing the New England job.
Patriots Rumors: Mike Vrabel Wants Patriots Job
NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran reported in December that Vrabel would be interested in New England's job if it became available. Now NFL writer Tony Pauline echoed the same sentiment.
Pauline wrote, "Vrabel wants the New England Patriots job, people close to him to me but Robert Kraft seems intent on bringing back Jerod Mayo — at least at present time."
Vrabel was one of the best Patriots of all time. He played in New England from 2001-2008, logging 606 total tackles, 55 TFLs, and 48 sacks. The Ohio State product secured three Super Bowls and is a member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.
Vrabel was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023. During that tenure, he went 54-45, making the playoffs three different times, including an AFC Championship Game appearance.
The 49-year-old is known for being a leader of men and will be a hot name this coaching cycle. The New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, and Chicago Bears all reportedly have interest in Vrabel but he wants the Patriots job.
This past season, Vrabel was a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns. He stayed involved in the game but will be the head coach for somebody in 2025. And as of right now, it definitely won't be in New England, which will certainly annoy the fanbase.
