Day three of free agency saw the New England Patriots add to the secondary by signing veteran safety Kevin Byard, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. As sweet as it is to add a player of Byard's caliber to the secondary, the fact that it came on a one-year, $9 million contract reinforces how big a steal this was for New England.

Adding Byard will immediately add another layer to the defense, improving the Patriots' already impressive secondary. Perhaps most importantly, Byard will be a great mentor to Craig Woodson, who stood out this past season as a rookie.

During his 10-year career, Byard has been one of the league's better safeties, earning three All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods, while leading the NFL in interceptions twice. Most recently, Byard has spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Bears, finishing this past season with an NFL-best seven interceptions.

The Tennessee Titans selected Byard in the third round of the 2016 draft. He remained with the Titans until he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. While in Tennessee, he was coached by current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel for six seasons, and that connection paid off for the Patriots in a big way when it came to Byard's decision.

Kevin Byard Signed with Patriots Due to Vrabel Connection

When deciding where to sign, Byard chose the Patriots due to his connection with Vrabel, per NFL Insider Josina Anderson. Connections between players and coaches always play a part in players deciding where they want to sign, and New England benefits from it with Byard.

Anderson shared on X following the news of Byard taking his talents to New England after speaking with the veteran, "it was either #Bears or the #Patriots, and you know I have relationship with Coach Vrabes; and New England it is..."

One of the defining characteristics of this past season for the Patriots was the culture that Mike Vrabel had instilled in his first season as head coach. After two consecutive 4-13 seasons, Vrabel helped turn the team around with a 14-3 record and an AFC championship. Byard joining the Patriots due to his connections with Vrabel shows how strong a culture he has built with his players.

New England has been busy during free agency so far, adding multiple players on each side of the ball. Offensively, the signing of Romeo Doubs could help the Patriots solve one of the offense's biggest issues this past season.
